About our Design Thinking for Innovation in Government series

You are invited to attend three in-person sessions (9/18, 10/16, 11/13) focused on the essential principles of design thinking, including: energizing purpose-built high performance teams, empathy as a gateway to address real human needs, and iterative prototyping to learn fast, energize curiosity, and adjust your design. Throughout the Design Thinking for Innovation immersion series you will work in purpose-built teams to address this design challenge: “How might we re-imagine mid-level management development for a more agile 21st Century Government workforce?” or another design challenge of your choosing.  In addition, you are invited to our online webinars between the face-to-face sessions where we will help answer questions, provide design and team coaching, and learn from each other. At the end of the Design Thinking for Innovation in Government immersion series you will have the opportunity to present your results during our celebration on December 11th.

Design Thinking for Innovation in Government immersion series objectives

Upon completion of the series, you will take away a set of practiced tools and prototypes to support ongoing innovation in your organization. You will also receive a certificate of completion with 12 continuous learning points and be able to:

  • Apply evidence-based “best of the best” Design Thinking frameworks to address your workplace challenges.
  • Identify and validate real human problems worth solving.
  • Manage complex innovation projects within the federal sector.
  • Intentionally cultivate high performance innovation teams with Emergenetics® and the evidence-based practices from Stanford University’s DesignX Lab.

Session One:  Empowering purpose-built high performance innovation teams.

Upon completion of this session participants will be able to:

  • Leverage your unique thinking and behavioral strengths to create cognitively diverse innovation teams in a “Meeting of the Minds” introductory workshop.
  • Apply practices to facilitate psychological safety, energize curiosity, and empower experimentation
  • Practice the evidence-based behaviors of high performance innovation teams.
  • Develop a preliminary “problem statement” for the Design Challenge.

Session Two: Placing the human at the center of the design lifecycle

Upon completion of this session participants will be able to:

  • Differentiate between a solution-prescribing mindset and need-finding mindset.
  • Apply Design Thinking tools that place the customer at center of design activity. 
  • Create basic prototypes guided by user insights to accelerate experimentation.

Session Three:  Making it real, prototypes and implementation

Upon completion of this session participants will be able to:

  • Integrate strategies from storytelling and experience design into prototype creation.
  • Develop functional prototypes to accelerate solution implementation and garner buy-in from relevant stakeholders.
  • Evaluate solution desirability and usefulness with various prototypes. 

Upon registering, you will receive an invitation to complete the Emergenetics® questionnaire in preparation for the “Meeting of the Minds” workshop during session one.

About our Design Thinking for Innovation in Government series facilitators

We have partnered with Wilson Claure from the Stanford DesignXLab, where serious design researchers study the mindsets, behaviors, and practices of high performing design innovation teams. Much like ISPI’s approach to studying exemplary performers, the Stanford DesignX Lab identifies the “best of the best” practices of designers in high performing teams.

Wilson Claure is a member and volunteer content contributor of ISPI Potomac. Wilson facilitates design thinking workshops internationally and is a sought-after innovator in large-scale digital transformations. Wilson’s research at Stanford University’s DesignX Lab on high performing teams and innovation enabled him to develop design thinking workshops that successfully help professionals unleash their innovative superpowers. As part of Design X Labs, Wilson applied rigorous academic methods to understand the scientific basis for why and how the innovation paradigm of Design Thinking succeeds and fails. In his previous role at Digital FastForward, Wilson supported clients in their pursuit of digital innovation and facilitated design thinking workshops internationally.

Peter Baverso, is President of the Potomac Chapter of the International Society for Performance Improvement; served as the human performance lead for the US Marine Corps Systems Command and as Adjunct Faculty for the University of Phoenix, John Sperling School of Management; and is Board Member of the Innovation and Organizational Change Management Institute. Peter currently leads Ventivia, LLC

Peter helps teams and organizations become smarter, faster, better, healthier, and happier through mindset shifting workshops and team building practices that inspire innovation and foster an inclusive culture of achievement. He is the author of the eX5 Strategic Innovation Framework, Human Performance Architecture Framework, and Agility from the Heart Coaching Program. \

Zikiria Chaudhary is Director of the Performance Innovation Institute and Program Chair for ISPI Potomac. As an Agilist with experience connecting stakeholders to deliver value and empower organizations, he develops innovative products by working with organizations from ideation to delivery. His client work has focused on product management, program/change management, strategic analysis, and training. This work has culminated in a modified mapping technique resulting in rapid prototype, design, and development of products. Zikiria’s clients span the Financial Services, SaaS, Consumer Products, Government, Education, and International Development industries. Currently, he serves as President and Chief Agilist of CITAZ LLC, where ideas become reality.
